Six Quick TIPS
.....For keeping your kids lunch healthy, delicious and fun!
1- Food Safety: In order to get your kids variety, you may need to use meats and dairy products, so it’s important to keep your kids lunch’s cold. Preventing germs and illness is important! You can always use ice packs. However, for another option to try freezing 100% juice boxes or water bottles to serve as ice packs to keep lunches cold and give the
kids an ice cold drink, or slushy at lunch time.
2- Choose Whole Wheat: from bread, bagels, wraps, tortillas, crackers, rice etc.
3-Try including at least one fruit and one vegetable with each lunch! Use a variety, so they don’t get sick of that fruit or vegetable and so they get all different vitamins and minerals that their little bodies need.
4-Choose whole foods rather than processed! Try making your own crackers, burritos and muffins for lunches(look under recipes to find good ones).
5-Be creative and keep it fun! Try different shapes with cookie cutters, make holidays and birthdays special! Don’t be afraid to try warm items in a thermos (soups/pasta!
6-Use My Plate as the guidelines for lunches: Make sure you have a protein (will help keeps those kids belly’s full) and a grain (whole wheat), fruit and vegetable. And diary….(this can be tricky)… Just remember to keep it cold!
