1: Fruits and Vegetables
are important for our bodies. Fruits and Vegetables contain different vitamins
and minerals that do different things for our bodies. It is important to get a
variety of fruits and vegetables to help our bodies function. Many kids have
forgotten about fruits and vegetables and overall consumption has decreased here
in America. Many of today’s kids eat junk food instead, but junk food doesn’t
provide vitamins and minerals that fruits and veggies do. We need to remember to
try and eat more fruits and vegetables, and to try all different kinds to see if
we like them. Remember to get fruits and vegetables from all different colors of
the rainbow.
Vitamin C: Oranges, cauliflower, and many other fruits and vegetables have
Vitamin C in them. Vitamin C helps the body’s defense system. It helps fight
infections, and also plays vital role in bones, blood, teeth and gums. (Show
Vitamin C poster)
Vitamin E: Mangos, pears, broccoli contain Vitamin E.
Vitamin E helps protect many cells throughout the body, especially the membranes
around cells. (Show Vitamin E poster)
Vitamin A: Carrots, pumpkin and apricots contain
Vitamin A. Vitamin A helps you see and is very important. (Show Vitamin A
poster)
Vitamin B: There are many different B vitamins that do
many things for your body. Potatoes and asparagus contain Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6
helps repair tissues, helps provide energy, and blood to the body.
Fiber and Antioxidants are also found in fruits and
vegetables. Fiber helps keep our intestines and stomach functioning well.
Antioxidants help prevent breakdown and damage to our bodies.
Section 2: Make half of your plate fruits and vegetables. Choose fruit juices
that are 100% juice. When using canned fruits, make sure they are canned in
light syrup, water, or own juice. Avoid heavy syrups. Eat a variety! (Give
myplate bookmarks).
Fruit of the Day: Pick a unique vegetable or fruit and highlight it!
Mango: Native to India but can be grown in most
tropical places. Many Mango trees can live to be over 300 years old, they have
lots of wide-spreading roots. In other countries mangos are made into jelly or
pickled and put all sorts of different dishes. Mangos are rich in vitamin A and
C! Cut Mango into slices and serve via napkins.
Activity:
Tape Vegetable and Fruits Cards on students back, have them try and guess what
fruits or vegetable is on their back. Only use Yes or No questions.
Conclusion: Eat you fruits and vegetables, they will
help you have the energy you need!
